Humour Me Montreal

May 13 @ Maison symphonique at Place des Arts

Theatre doors open at 7:30 pm; show starts at 8:00 pm

Humour Me is a charity event where a group of committed sponsors, brave CEOs and stand-up comedians come together to raise money for worthy causes.  Humour Me applies a twist to the standard stand-up routine by bringing together both professional comedians and influential, high-profile amateurs to perform together.

So far we have raised over $13 million for some incredible groups who are working hard to make a real difference in the lives of Canadians.  The net proceeds of Humour Me Montreal will support Saint Raphael’s Palliative Care Home and Day Centre.

A Message from David Goodman

BONJOUR MONTRÉAL!  This is our second show in Montreal and it would not be possible without the sheer force and determination of long-time family friend, Richard Renaud.  Once Rick decides something is going to happen there’s no stopping him and he led the charge to bring “Fais-moi rire” back to the city.  Thank you Rick!

As boys growing up in Montreal in the 1970s, my older brother and I loved comedy.  Whenever something funny happened in our lives we would look at each other and say, “that’s going in the routine”.  We memorized Steve Martin’s A Wild and Crazy Guy routine and became “two crazy Czechoslovakian brothers” in our young imaginations.  About 15 years ago on the eve of my 40th birthday “the routine” had still never been performed.  I had degrees in law and business, was the CEO of a mutual fund company, father of four children and a husband of 18 years – not exactly a wild and crazy guy.  At the encouragement of one of my oldest and best friends, I took a course at Humber College on how to perform stand-up comedy.  There were people of all backgrounds developing their comedy chops with the aid of a professional comedian.  I went on to perform at open mics around the city ultimately earning my way onto the Yuk Yuk’s roster.

Humour Me was inspired by the comedic journey I experienced as the CEO of a mutual fund company learning the craft of stand-up, coupled with the fundraising angle of Dancing with the Stars.  Eight years later we have raised over $13 million for some very worthwhile causes.

Over the years I have called in every favour and IOU convincing some of Canada’s finest business leaders to perform a short stand-up routine to raise money for charity.  I must salute this year’s contestants as they are each celebrated in their field and worthy of a night of recognition and awards.  Instead they put themselves on the line to compete in a comedy contest to help those less fortunate.  It is a courageous and admirable deed.  It’s also a lot of fun.

Kathy Assayag, Daniel Brosseau, Tony Loffreda and Marie-Eve Prevost will compete for the honour of “Funniest Amateur” of the evening.  They will get help with their jokes from local comedians Joey Elias, Heidi Foss and Eddy King, and will be judged on-stage by Terry DiMonte, Jamie Orchard and Lino Saputo, Jr. They will be judged on their humour as well as how much money they raise.  Our host, Sonia Benezra, will keep us entertained between acts.

Following the comedy challenge our headliner, the legendary Howie Mandel, will take the stage for the second half of the show.  In previous years we have had Gary Gulman, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jerry Seinfeld, Dennis Miller, Dana Carvey and Jim Gaffigan headline the evening.  We have also had guest hosts including Shaun Majumder, Ben Mulroney, Jessica Holmes, Sugar Sammy, Seán Cullen, Dave Foley, Seth Meyers, Steve Patterson and Gerry Dee.

We have raised over $13 million for some incredible groups who are working hard to make a real difference in the lives of Canadians.  The proceeds of Humour Me Montreal will support
St. Raphael’s capital campaign.  Please help us meet their $10 million goal by sponsoring one – or all – of the amateur comedians.  Thank you.

See you at the show!

4 CEOs Perform a Stand-up Comedy Routine

Not only will the CEOs have to perform five minutes of original stand-up comedy, they’ll have to juggle comedy classes, everyday business and fundraising.  They will work their Contacts lists, strong-arm their business associates and beg for every possible dollar for St. Raphael’s.  After intense coaching by seasoned local comedians, these movers and shakers will be judged on-stage by a panel of industry veterans.  But, most importantly, they’ll be raising money for an important cause.

Eddy King

Young Eddy King arrived in Quebec at 13 years of age, directly from the Parisian suburbs where he grew up with his Congolese mother.

From a young age he was interested in the performing arts, and despite winning several rap contests, in the end his true calling was stand-up comedy.  He worked hard on his craft and in 2007 was crowned “Coup de Cœur” in the up-and-coming category at the Just for Laughs festival.  He went on to perform his now famous bit about the comic book Tintin in the Congo before launching his first one-man-show in 2010 – appropriately named Eddy King

Since then, we’ve seen Eddy on the small screen on Quebec shows like L’Heure est grave, and in English on Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud.  He’s been on the air with Gravel le matin, as well as on the big screen in Denys Arcand’s last movie La chute de l’empire américain.  On the stage Eddy has toured Canada from sea to sea in both French and English.  He’s been in many galas at Just for Laughs and has gone as far as Johannesburg to spread his royal kind of comedy, both funny and intelligent, about his family life, his experiences and his beliefs.

Eddy’s next endeavour is his second one-man show entitled Mokonzi – a title fit for a king!
